A Protected River Landscape in Eastern Minnesota

Wild River State Park is located in Chisago County, Minnesota, along the federally protected St. Croix National Scenic Riverway — one of the cleanest and most carefully preserved river systems in the Upper Midwest. Established in 1973, the park protects more than 6,800 acres of forest, prairie, and wetlands and preserves nearly 18 miles of largely undeveloped river shoreline.

This is a landscape shaped by glaciers, flowing water, and time. Pine-covered bluffs rise above the river corridor, hardwood forests spread across rolling terrain, and restored prairie opens wide views rarely found in heavily wooded regions. The result is a park that feels expansive and varied, where each ecosystem blends naturally into the next.

Trails Through Forest, Prairie, and River Valley

Wild River State Park features more than 35 miles of hiking trails that showcase its diverse terrain. Some paths follow the St. Croix River with elevated overlooks, while others travel through restored prairie and wooded interior sections of the park.

Cycling is permitted on both paved and natural surface trails, and designated routes are available for horseback riding. During warmer months, canoeing and kayaking along the St. Croix River offer a quiet way to experience the landscape from water level. The river’s steady flow and scenic surroundings make it well suited for relaxed paddling trips.

Wildlife is commonly seen throughout the park, including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, migratory birds, and a wide range of native songbirds that thrive in the park’s varied habitats.

Camping Along Minnesota’s Scenic Riverway

Camping options at Wild River State Park include drive-in sites, walk-in sites, group camping areas, and rustic cabins. Many campsites are wooded, offering privacy and a traditional Minnesota camping atmosphere while remaining close to trails and river access points.

The campground layout is easy to navigate while maintaining a natural setting. Visitors traveling in smaller rigs — including those exploring the region in a Mini-T Campervan — often find the park well suited for extended stays centered around hiking, river access, and seasonal scenery.

A True Four-Season Park

Wild River State Park changes character dramatically with the seasons. Spring brings migrating birds and emerging prairie grasses. Summer highlights river recreation and open trail access. Autumn transforms the hardwood forests into vibrant color displays across the river valley.

Winter offers a quieter experience. More than 20 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails wind through forest and prairie, along with routes for snowshoeing and winter hiking. Snow-covered bluffs and open grasslands create long sightlines across the landscape, revealing terrain that is often hidden by summer foliage.

Each season offers a distinct way to experience the park, making it a year-round destination rather than a single-season visit.

Prairie Restoration and Conservation

One of the park’s defining features is its large-scale prairie restoration work. Native grasses and wildflowers support pollinators and help reestablish ecosystems that were once common across Minnesota but are now relatively rare.

This restoration effort complements the protection of the St. Croix River itself, which is part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The designation recognizes the river’s exceptional natural, cultural, and recreational value and helps ensure long-term preservation of its water quality and surrounding landscapes.

Location and Access

Wild River State Park sits approximately one hour northeast of Minneapolis–St. Paul, near Center City and Taylors Falls. Its proximity to the Twin Cities makes it easily accessible for day trips, weekend camping, or longer visits focused on outdoor recreation.

Despite its convenience, the park maintains a strong sense of quiet and space, particularly along the extended river corridor where development is minimal.

A Landscape Defined by River, Forest, and Prairie

Wild River State Park is defined less by structures or attractions and more by the continuity of its natural systems. Forest, prairie, and river meet across a broad landscape that reflects the ecological character of eastern Minnesota.

It is a place where the St. Croix River continues to shape the land, where restored prairie supports native species, and where seasonal change is visible across miles of protected terrain. For visitors seeking open space, river scenery, and year-round outdoor access, Wild River State Park offers one of Minnesota’s most balanced and enduring natural settings.
